A camping getaway

During the week we had the opportunity to take the roof top tent for a little getaway. We have wanted to explore some of the National Park Campgrounds on the coast and this week the weather was perfect.
Going up the coast is always my favourite place to visit, especially as we pass the Nabiac Artisan Bakery around morning tea time - a perfect time for morning tea (the choice of sweets is incredible) and a hot coffee.
As it was the first Sunday of the month we took the opportunity to call into Black Head (my favourite place) and their Bazzar. This is a great market with local arts and crafts, fresh veggies and honey. I didn’t realise that at the same time they have a Car boot sale in the local FoodWorks car park - lots of second hand goods for sale, so win win!
Have you ever been driving on the beach? It is my favourite! With the windows down, the sea howling in the background, the sparkles on the water; it is all the glimmers all at once; you are totally in the moment (no bad thoughts for a little while!)

On the beach we found the perfect swimming hole, so we ate our lunch (yes, pies from that Nabiac bakery) and had a swim. No one was around, the white sands stretched out and you do not see anyone. Perfection!
From here we drove inland for a few minutes to our camp for the night. Diamond Head Campground. My goodness what a gem of a place. It is important to book and after spending the night here I can understand why, especially as it is only $25 a night. The camp ground is kept beautifully, it is very spacious and is right on the beach front. Although the showers are cold only, they were kept very clean and had flushing toilets! Win Win!

My favourite was seeing all the kangaroos, they just wandered into your camp site, had a look around and would just look at you as they lay down for a sleep or scratched their back on the trees. Although we saw 2 goannas, it was on pack up so I wasn’t too scared (I am very frightened of snakes and lizards, and the size of goannas really freak me out.)
I was sad to move on, but I did have to find a Post Office to post some orders. On our travels we found by chance another beautiful little coffee shop for morning tea called the Boatshed. Gosh it was beautiful in the sweetest little town of Dunbogan.
Back onto the beach and after a ferry crossing, a swim and lunch we made our way onto Point Plummer Camp Ground. I thought Diamond Head was amazing, this campground was even closer to the beach. We were lucky to snag a campsite with water views, but at $24.50 a night and with caravan road access, it was packed. This too had flushing toilets and cold showers, but was not quite as clean as Diamond Head. There was less wildlife and although there were signs to say ‘Don’t feed the dingos' we did not see any. Nor did we see any goannas (thank goodness)! If you ever go, site 46 was best. The night was so balmy so we could open up the tent sides and I fell asleep watching the moon shimmer on the water and feel the sea breeze on my face. Seriously, I am not making this up!

From here we made our way up the beach and headed to Hat Head National Park. We went to the caravan park and was surprised that there were plenty of unpowered sites left. We have been here plenty of times with the caravan. It is hubby’s favourite place and he has been eager to camp there in the tent. We found a great site next to the creek with filtered views of the water and headland. At $40 it was pricey but we were both keen for a warm shower. Unfortunately we did not pack for cooler weather, so when the sun went down and the mosquitos came out our legs had nowhere to hide. The mossie marks are still on my feet and wake me through the night, a stark reminder never to go camping without my jeans or tracky pants!

The threat of rain ended the trip, and after a stop at another yummy bakery at Gladstone (are you seeing a theme here?) we made our way back down the freeway home.
So 3 nights in the roof top tent was successful! I loved these beach front camp spots. But as it is starting to get cooler we are planning some trips inland, not my favourite but I’ll keep you posted!
