This is Going to Hurt by Adam Kay
What are you reading at the moment?
I just finished this delightful book by Adam Kay.

I loved the honesty of this book, it made me laugh, gasp & cry.
Although it deals with a doctor’s experiences in the UK, the medical system is (sadly) very similar to us here in Australia.
I know that we live in a very lucky country in relation to our medical system. I have been blessed with the system when the kids were little and we (thankfully) did not need the emergency service. Except for that one time when a hand was burnt, however the system was quick, and the staff dealt with our situation beautifully and efficiently.
How things have changed.
Fast forward 15 years and unfortunately we had a wait 11 hours in Emergency to be administered into the hospital and even then we did not get to see a doctor. Another 3 hours later and we were discharged. Without seeing a doctor. Apparently mental health is just not a priority.
Adam’s accounts of his experience were raw and truthful. I could not help but reflect deeply my own experience with my mum which would end up being her last day earth side .
This was three years ago when my beautiful mother was literally stuck between two hospitals. In the first
hospital the wonderful doctor was working beyond his shift, but could do nothing for my mother, she needed a specialist. The hospital that she needed to be transferred to was so full there was literally no where for her to go. Even the ambulance bay was full. The incredible nurses at hospital one were limited and stressed. As I sat for hours helping my mother one nurse said to me “Thank god you are here, I don’t know what we would have done with her.”
Sadly I was thinking the same thing. I didn’t know what they would have done with her either.
It’s still something that I think of. Often. Repeatedly. And it breaks my heart. Always.
Yet these are the experiences that our doctors, nurses and health profesionals deal will daily. They truely have my highest regard.
This book was a wonderful insight into seeing the health profession from the doctors point of view. And what a view it is ( I am thinking of the number of different items that Adam had to retrieve from many a bottom)
I believe there is a new tv series based on the book that I have not watched yet. In Australia it is on Stan. The link is below
But I would definitely recommend reading the book first.
The podcast is also a very funny to listen to Adam talk about his book and his life experiences
Don’t forget to let me know what you are reading.
And remember Sunday‘s should really be about
books.
