Hello, I am excited to share my Sunflower Granny Square Book Cover Tutorial with you. I adore books, and I adore my sunflower granny squares, so I thought I would combine these two loves of mine.

With Mother’s Day fast approaching, I thought these book covers would make the perfect gift for mothers who are book lovers or journal enthusiasts. Or, as always, you can make one for yourself—we deserve beautiful makes in our lives that make us smile. And this make definitely makes me smile. The Sunflower Granny Square Book Cover is perfect for slow making—creating it over a few days. Or, if you need a gift sooner, it can easily be made in one afternoon.

Materials • What You’ll Need

The sunflower granny squares can be made using any yarn from your stash. This is what I used to create my book cover (approximately 29cm x 15cm), which fits larger novels.

Yarn
; Nundle Woollen Mill 12 ply Australian Merino Yarn

* Brown (centre of the sunflower – Round 1)

* Oatmeal (Round 2)

* Natural (Round 3)

* Burnt Orange (Round 4 – approx. 2 balls / 140 metres)

Hook
 5.5mm

Other

* Scissors

* Yarn needle

Before You Begin

To make this book cover, you will first need to create 4 Sunflower Granny Squares.

This is a relaxed, step by step tutorial, so you can crochet along at your own pace.

To Create Your Book Cover

Please remember this is a guide — not a full written pattern. The video tutorial above will walk you through each step.

1. Join 2 squares to create one panel

2. Repeat to make a second panel

3. Join the panels together on three sides

4. Crochet 2 rows around the top edge of the book cover

5. Add the pom pom tie

Pom Pom Tie Instructions

To create the pom pom tie, secure your yarn in the middle of the book cover (please see the video tutorial for positioning).

Chain 200 (approx. 114cm in length).

At the end of the chain, create a pom pom stitch:

Pom Pom Stitch:

* Yarn over and insert into 3rd chain from hook, pull up a loop (3 loops on hook), pull through leaving 2 loops

* Yarn over, insert into same stitch, pull up (4 loops), pull through leaving 3 loops

* Repeat this process until you have 6 loops on your hook

* Pull through all loops

* Chain 1 and insert back into the same stitch

Your pom pom stitch is now complete.

Slip stitch back down the chain until you reach the starting point.

Finishing & Notes

To make a smaller book cover, you can use a lighter yarn and smaller hook.

You can also create smaller granny squares by working fewer rounds (for example, 4 rounds instead of 5).

I’ve used yarn from my stash to create this book cover, so feel free to play with colours and textures. It’s part of the joy of making.

And if you’re creating this as a gift—for yourself or someone else —choose colours you love, making it truly unique and special.

I love using these book covers, especially when I’m taking my book to the beach—it helps keep the sand to a minimum.

When we go camping, I also use the book cover to keep my journal and pen together, so I can easily find them in my bag.

And of course, the sunflower granny squares always make me smile.

Sometimes that’s all we need… something beautiful, created slowly, with love and intention, to bring a small moment of joy.
