Crochet basics ~ A Free Learn- to-Crochet Tutorial

I am often asked about the best way to learn how to crochet and I always say the granny square. The granny square is great for practicing your stitches and is achievable. You have a finished project at the end, and from that humble granny square you can create so much! I have a gentle free granny square tutorial here.

However I have found that one of the major obstacles in learning how to crochet is manipulating both the yarn and hook. Often this is more difficult if you are left handed or ambidextrous like me. So I always suggest that you practice holding the yarn and hook first, becoming familiar with them until they become more comfortable in your hands.

I have created a video tutorial where I take you through the steps of the crochet basics. When you watch the video you can see how each stitch is created and then you can practice. As you become more comfortable with holding the yarn and hook and creating each stitch it is easier to transfer this knowledge to granny square making and for your crochet journey.

In my Beginner Crochet Kits, I always include this tutorial alongside the patterns. My beginner friendly kits include; The Baby Blanket Kit, The Chunky Granny Square Kit, The Granny Square Bag Kit + the Retro Baby Blanket kit.

Please remember that if you need help with any of your crochet.

I love helping people learn to crochet.

Crochet is so important for you. Not only for your creativity but to be able to learn new skills requires your brain to fire new synapses, creating new connections. Once you learn how to crochet, your brain benefits from the relaxing hormones as you slip into a flow of creativity and relaxation. Other studies also suggest that crochet can be beneficial for joint movement and overall mental health. So your whole body is benefiting from the healing nature of crochet!
